Hi all,

I recently published my album with Tunecore, and couldn't be happier with the smoothness of the digital distribution process;

I have just one question: i plan to manufacture my "real" cd's soon, using Tunecore provided UPC and ISRC numbers, and have already uploaded the song names to CDDB (gracenote...)

When i start selling my cd, i would like for listeners to also get covers automatically in iTunes and WMP et al; Does Tunecore provide any kind of support in providing album cover art to services like Muze or others, were these common players get their cover art?

Thank You

Miguel

I believe the album art that's embedded in MP3's is the responsibility of the store to do - though I could be wrong. But as I see it I think each store takes the submitted data then makes their own digital files from it including the album art because each store has different specifications. Amazon for example has a default file quality of 256kbps where others use a different bitrate. iTunes uses their own .m4a format. So to get the album art in all those different files I would think it would have to fall on the store.

I'm referring to the cover art of the actual cd's, not MP3's...

You said, "When i start selling my cd, i would like for listeners to also get covers automatically in iTunes and WMP". That sounded to me that you meant album art in the digital file.

Not sure I understand your question, sorry.

No problem Rev, I'll just explain in another way:

Imagine the latest..hum.. Madonna.. album (like it or not), so, you can download it from iTunes or buy the CD in a store.

If you donwload it from iTunes, all mp3's come with cover art, song title, etc.

But..

If you buy the cd in a store, and play it on iTunes or Media Player or Winamp or any other program, the album art and track names must be downloaded before being displayed. So, what these programs do is access online databases and get the album and track names based on UPC and ISRC numbers, usually form Gracenote (formerly CDDB) and the covers from other databases, like MUZE.

I know that many people do not manufacture the actual CD's when using Tunecore, but i do plan to cell the shiny 12cm disks from my website, and I'll use the codes Tunecore assigned me. I would really like my costumers to get the cover art when they pop the cd into the disk drive.

The problem here, is that Gracenote is very easy to update by independent artists using iTunes and a couple of other programs that offer the access to the service, but cover art databases usually can only be accessed directly by labels and similar companies.

So my question is: is Tunecore currently using or planning on providing this service for it's clients?

That's about it

Miguel

Even though we can manufacture your discs, Miguel, the relationship you're talking about lies between the store and the service (AllMusic, CDDB, what have you). The actual nature of the disc isn't really part of it.

So I guess it's a question we can't answer! I'll nose around, though, see if I can turn up any info.

Hi Peter, hope you can find anything, I tried doing some digging around on the web but there's some sort of "mysterious" lack of information on how these covers end up being uploaded to these databases...
